Challenge
A US Air Force base required sound control doors for a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) project. The facility name is classified and cannot be disclosed. The project demanded doors meeting ICD/ICS 705, Version 1.4, specifically Sound Group 3 (STC 45) and Sound Group 4 (STC 50) ratings. The solicitation was issued by the Contracting Officer at the Air Force base under a Small Business Set-Aside requiring SAM registration.
The scope of work was complex: 28 single leaf doors (3 ft x 7 ft), two oversized single leaf doors (4 ft x 7 ft), one specialized small door (1 ft 1 in x 3 ft), and five double leaf doors (6 ft x 7 ft). Every door assembly required electrified storeroom lock sets with outside trim, panic bars, badge readers with pin pads, KABA CDX10 locks with pedestrian deadbolts, and door closers. Several doors subsequently required magnetic locks. All doors required one-hour fire rating and a two-piece split frame design for installation into existing partition walls. Doors also needed preparation for access control systems and badge readers supplied by others.
Solution
QuietSwing/QuietGuard STC 50, 2.5 inch thick doors and frame assemblies were specified for the entire project. The split frame design was critical as the partition walls had already been constructed, requiring the frames to be installed around existing construction without demolition.
All 36 doors were pre-hung in the factory with all hardware installed prior to shipping. This factory pre-assembly approach ensured every door, frame, and hardware component met the exacting requirements for fit, finish, and operation before arriving on site. The installation crew coordinated directly with base personnel before fabrication to verify that all partition openings met the required dimensions.
The scope included all shipping, handling, complete installation, and post-installation training of base personnel on the operation and maintenance of the door assemblies.
Results
All 36 doors were delivered and installed on schedule. Every door passed Noise Isolation Class (NIC) field testing, meeting or exceeding the requirements for both Sound Group 3 (STC 45) and Sound Group 4 (STC 50) as required by ICD 705. The project was certified as 100% ICD 705 compliant for doors, door frames, and lock packages.
The factory pre-assembly methodology proved essential to achieving the required performance under the tight tolerances demanded by SCIF construction. By validating fit, finish, and hardware operation before shipping, the field installation proceeded without the rework cycles that commonly affect secure facility door projects.
