Fall, a time of change, but also a time of many harmful noise.

It's in the air, you can feel it, temperatures are starting to drop and the leaves are starting to change...Fall has arrived! It's the season filled with football, cider and donuts, haunted houses, and pumpkin picking.

It seems like one minute we're wearing shorts and t-shirts, and then suddenly just like that we're putting on our favorite comfy sweater and taking a trip to our favorite local pumpkin patch to choose the perfect pumpkin.

Fall is a season that brings bold color and crisp air, but along with the fun of hay rides and scary chain saws in haunted corn mazes comes loud, potentially dangerous noises.

Though it's something most of us probably don't think about, many of the great activities we take part in during the Fall season can be harmful on our ears.

Very loud noises can cause immediate hearing damage, even if they are only heard for a short period of time. A tractor (without a cab) for instance can reach 100 dB and a chainsaw can reach 110 dB.

To put that into perspective, normal conversation starts at around 60 dB and when noise reaches above the 85 dB mark it can become dangerous and potentially cause gradual hearing loss. Auditory nerves can be permanently damaged from prolonged exposure at 90 dB.

We all know that going to haunted houses and taking tractor rides is part of the fall experience, it's what we look forward to. Keeping in mind that age old statement, safety first!- just remember to be safe and mindful of the varying noises that can cause potential damage.

Be aware of the noises that put your hearing at risk, and try to limit your exposure to these harmful noises as well as possible, all the while having fun and enjoying the experience in the process.
