A two-story office in Troy, Michigan measured reverberation times of 0.9 to 1.4 seconds. Challenge

A two-story office in Troy, Michigan had drywall walls and ceilings and vinyl plank floors throughout, smooth surfaces that reflect most of the sound that reaches them. The office wanted clearer speech and less background din in its reception area, kitchen, private offices, open office, and conference room.

Solution

In February 2026, Memtech Acoustics measured reverberation time (RT60) and speech clarity (C50) in each space with an impulse source, recording at least two microphone positions per room. Reverberation ran from 0.9 to 1.4 seconds, highest in the open office, against a target of no more than 0.8 seconds.

Memtech used a parametric model built from the measured data to size the treatment, then laid out flat, 2-inch fabric-wrapped wall and ceiling panels with an overall NRC of 1.15, room by room, in 2D drawings. Memtech supplied the panels and coordinated their installation in May 2026.

Results

On August 27, 2026, Memtech repeated the test with the same procedure. Every space met the target: reception 0.75 seconds, open office 0.77, conference room 0.70, private offices 0.60, and kitchen 0.55.

Michigan Association of Conservation Districts

The Michigan Association of Conservation Districts measured reverberation as high as 4.0 seconds in the open meeting room at its Allegan office, a room used for board meetings and workshops. Memtech Acoustics measured the space and engineered a wall and ceiling panel layout modeled to bring reverberation under 1.0 second so staff can hear one another clearly.

Sylvan Lake Community Center

The Sylvan Lake Community Center's multipurpose room seats up to 150 for events, ceremonies, and film showings, but its vaulted ceiling and hard surfaces pushed reverberation to 1.9 seconds, well past the point where speech stays clear. Memtech Acoustics measured the room and engineered a ceiling and wall panel layout modeled to bring it to a 1.0 second target.

Apostolic Christian Church of Livonia

The dining hall at Apostolic Christian Church of Livonia grew hard to talk in when the room filled for gatherings of up to eighty people. Memtech Acoustics measured reverberation at 0.8 seconds, above the range a shared meal and conversation call for. Memtech engineered a wall panel and ceiling tile layout and confirmed by measurement that reverberation dropped to between 0.5 and 0.6 seconds.
