Grace Emmanuel Baptist Church in Flint, Michigan uses its event hall for worship, gatherings, and music. The room sounded harsh and was hard to follow, and the cause was reverberation.

Challenge

Memtech Acoustics measured reverberation time (RT60) in the event hall and found values as high as 6.5 seconds across the speech frequency range, more than double the recommended level for a space of this kind. The long reverberation was consistent with the poor speech clarity, muddy music playback, and elevated background noise the congregation had reported.

Solution

Using the measured data, Memtech engineered a custom melamine foam panel layout sized to reach a 3 second reverberation target. Panels were placed on the stage wall, the wall opposite the stage, the entrance wall, and the ceiling, positioned for both acoustic performance and a clean architectural fit. Memtech coordinated the installation.

Results

On completion, Memtech returned to measure the room under the same conditions as the original study. Reverberation had dropped from approximately 6.5 seconds to approximately 3 seconds, meeting the design target and confirming the result by measurement. The hall now supports clearer speech, better music playback, and a more comfortable environment for the congregation.
