Challenge

Alamo Heights High School, a public high school in Alamo Heights, Texas, needed a barrier to shield the surrounding community and school campus from mechanical equipment noise. The site presented significant construction challenges: field measurements revealed that none of the existing steel embedded in the concrete was plumb or level, requiring design adjustments based on actual site conditions rather than as-built drawings.

Solution

The QuietLine SLR Concealer panel system was specified for this application. The SLR Concealer panel slides over the front flange of the support steel framework, hiding the structural columns and providing a uniform, consistent vertical and horizontal reveal between panels. Preformed corner panels added a finished architectural detail at transitions.

The installed barrier measures 77 ft by 38 ft by 20 ft high. As a custom touch, the school logo was mounted to the structural framework behind the barrier through pre-made holes. The penetrations were acoustically treated with mass-loaded vinyl draping and acoustic sealant to maintain the barrier's sound attenuation performance while accommodating the branding element.

The project approach included field verification of the as-built conditions and design modifications based on actual measurements rather than relying on construction documents. This proactive coordination with the general contractor avoided costly problems that would have emerged during installation.

Results

The barrier was successfully installed, shielding both the school campus and surrounding community from mechanical equipment noise. The SLR Concealer system provided the combination of acoustic performance and aesthetic appeal required for a school environment, and the integrated school logo gave the installation a customized, permanent appearance rather than looking like utilitarian industrial screening.
