High-Performance Acoustical Windows

Soundproof windows, or more accurately referred to as acoustical windows, are engineered glazing assemblies designed to significantly reduce airborne noise transmission while maintaining visibility, daylight, and operational awareness.

Unlike conventional insulated glass units, these systems are purpose-built to address traffic noise, mechanical systems, and environmental sound intrusion. High-performance acoustical window systems typically achieve substantial sound reduction (30 to 50+ decibels depending on configuration) by combining multiple layers of laminated glass, asymmetric thicknesses, engineered airspaces, and airtight framing.

When properly integrated, these systems can deliver STC ratings well above standard commercial glazing, making them suitable for demanding noise control applications.

Types of Soundproof Window Systems

Interior Window Inserts

Interior window inserts are secondary glazing systems installed on the room-side of existing windows. By creating a sealed airspace between the existing window and the insert, these systems significantly improve sound isolation without exterior modification.
Key Characteristics & Applications:
  • Installed inside the building, behind existing windows
  • No exterior access or façade changes required
  • Most effective for offices exposed to traffic or rail noise
  • Urban commercial buildings, studios and monitoring spaces
  • Ideal for industrial control rooms

Replacement Acoustic Windows

Replacement acoustic windows are full-frame window systems designed to replace existing glazing entirely. These systems integrate multiple layers of laminated glass, engineered airspaces, and acoustically rated frames into a single assembly.
Key Characteristics & Applications:
  • Higher performance than standard replacement windows
  • Multi-pane, asymmetric glass constructions
  • Airtight compression seals and rigid frames
  • Suitable for new construction or major renovations
  • Ideal for commercial or residential buildings near roadways or airports

Double-Window Systems (Window-to-Window Assemblies)

Double-window systems consist of two independent window frames installed in series, separated by a large airspace. This configuration provides some of the highest achievable sound isolation for transparent assemblies.
Key Characteristics & Applications:
  • Two physically separate window systems
  • Extremely effective for low-frequency noise
  • Often used where maximum attenuation is required
  • Ideal for environmental noise mitigation, critical listening environments
  • Easily cut and field-fit for custom installations

Performance Ranges & Design Considerations

Depending on configuration, acoustical window systems commonly achieve STC ratings from the high 30s into the 50+ range, perceived noise reduction of 70–95%, significant improvement in low-frequency noise control compared to conventional glazing.

Actual performance depends on glass thickness and lamination strategy, airspace depth, frame rigidity and sealing, and integration with surrounding wall construction.

Memtech evaluates these variables during design to ensure the window system performs as intended once installed, not just on paper.

The Memtech Advantage.

Rather than offering a single “soundproof window,” Memtech designs application-specific glazing systems based on measured noise levels, operational needs, and architectural constraints. We guide selection, detailing, and integration so performance is predictable, measurable, and durable.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What type of soundproof window is best?
The best system depends on noise source levels, frequency content, and installation constraints. Inserts work well for retrofits, while double-window systems deliver the highest performance.
Do soundproof windows eliminate noise completely?
No. They significantly reduce noise to functional levels. Memtech defines success based on measured outcomes, not absolute silence.
Are soundproof windows custom-built?
Yes. High-performance acoustic glazing is typically engineered per application, not selected off the shelf.
Can these systems handle low-frequency noise?
Yes. Systems with large airspaces and laminated glass are especially effective against traffic, industrial, and mechanical noise.
Can windows be retrofitted?
In many cases, yes — particularly with interior insert or secondary glazing systems.
What’s the typical lead time for material supply?
