What is an Acoustical Door?

An acoustical door is a complete door system (leaf, frame, perimeter seals and threshold) tested to ASTM E90 so the opening keeps up with the sound rating of the wall around it. Memtech Acoustics supplies swing, pivot and folding acoustical doors from the mid-30s STC for accordion doors up to STC 56 for swinging doors, plus sliding, lifting and rolling doors for large openings and SCIF doors for ICD 705 Sound Group 3 and 4. Most arrive factory-assembled, with seals, hardware and threshold already installed.

The Weakest Link in Soundproofing

Not even the most advanced wall systems can deliver true sound control if the door allows sound to escape. Doors often become acoustic weak points (leaky, underperforming, and overlooked) degrading the acoustic performance of adjoining walls and structures.

Memtech Acoustics supplies custom engineered soundproof doors, crafted and tested to preserve acoustic integrity of rooms and enclosures. These high-performance systems provide precision seals at critical points, ensuring that the overall solution performs as engineered.
They provide:
  • STC ratings from 35 to 56 to match the performance of adjacent wall assemblies (lab-tested to ASTM E90 sound transmission standards).
  • Complete systems including door leaf, frame, seals, and thresholds for airtight performance.
  • Architectural finish options to complement interior design without compromising performance.
  • Single and double door configurations to suit conference rooms, mechanical spaces, and secure facilities.
A door only performs as well as its seals. See our sound-tested door seal systems for head and jamb gaskets, drop-down door bottoms and thresholds.
Memtech Acoustics can help your door(s) become a seamless extension of your noise control system.

Sliding, Lifting, Folding and Rolling Acoustic Doors

When an opening is wider than the 12 feet of a typical pair of swing doors, the right door depends on the clear wall space beside and above the opening.
How to Choose:
  • Folding (bi-parting): Panels stack to one or both sides, with no clear wall space needed beside or above the opening. Bi-fold up to 20 feet wide, tri-fold 20 to 40 feet. STC 50, 52 or 54.
  • Sliding: Needs clear wall space beside the opening that is wider than the opening; a bi-parting slider splits it between both sides. Typical openings from 10 × 10 ft to 20 × 30 ft, motorized with push-button controls. STC 51.
  • Lifting: Needs clear wall space above the opening that is taller than the opening, plus structural towers on each side. Typical openings from 10 × 10 ft to 20 × 20 ft, motorized. Rating confirmed per model when quoted.
  • Rolling: For large openings with room for the door to coil above. Rating confirmed per model when quoted.
Send us the opening size and the clear space beside and above it, and we will recommend the door type.

When a Better Door Will Not Help

A door is one element of a partition. A high-STC door in a wall rated well below it, or beside unsealed ducts, gaps or a lightweight ceiling, will not deliver its rating in the field, because sound takes the weaker path. Memtech Acoustics matches the door to the adjacent wall assembly and checks those flanking paths before recommending a rating.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why is the door often the weakest point in a soundproofed room or enclosure?
A wall assembly is only as effective as its least-performing component. Gaps at the perimeter, insufficient door mass, and inadequate sealing at the threshold are the most common failure points. Acoustical doors are engineered as complete systems (door leaf, frame, perimeter seals, and threshold) to minimize these flanking paths and match the performance of the adjacent wall assembly.
What STC ratings are available for acoustical doors, and how do I know which one I need?
Memtech Acoustics supplies acoustical doors from STC 35 to STC 56, tested to ASTM E90. As a general benchmark: STC 41 to 45 suits conference rooms and classrooms that need good speech privacy; STC 45 to 50 suits recording studios, broadcast rooms and healthcare spaces with strict privacy requirements; STC 50 to 56 is specified for industrial test cells, power generation, SCIFs and high sound levels. The right target depends on the source level, the reduction needed and the rating of the adjacent wall.
What types of acoustical doors does Memtech Acoustics supply?
Memtech Acoustics supplies QuietSwing® Architectural swing doors (STC 45 to 56), the QuietSwing® Alexis™ concealed-hinge door (STC 51), QuietSwing® EZ Open™ low-force doors (STC 45 to 51), the QuietPivot™ center-pivot door (STC 45), QuietFold® bi-parting folding doors for 12 to 40 ft openings (STC 50, 52 and 54), QuietSlide® sliding doors (STC 51), lifting and rolling doors for large openings, QuietSwing® Industrial heavy-duty doors (STC 50+), accordion doors and QuietGuard™ SCIF doors.
What is the QuietSwing® Alexis™ door, and when should I specify it?
The Alexis™ is an architectural-grade swing door featuring a patented concealed hinge design. No exposed hardware is visible from either side of the door, preserving the clean aesthetic of high-end interiors. At 1-3/4" door thickness, it works with standard building hardware and arrives factory-assembled with all hardware, seals, and a pre-installed threshold. The split-frame design allows it to be installed into existing openings, making it well-suited for commercial office retrofits, corporate headquarters, hospitality spaces, and any environment where aesthetics and acoustic performance need to coexist.
What is the difference between magnetic seals and compression seals on acoustical doors?
Both seal systems serve the same function to create an airtight perimeter closure when the door is closed, but they work differently. Magnetic seals attract and compress automatically as the door closes, requiring no manual adjustment and providing consistent contact around the full door perimeter. Compression seals use mechanical force to create the seal.

The QuietSwing® EZ Open™ system combines both: a custom compression seal working in tandem with the magnetic seal to reduce the force needed to open the door to under 3 lbs, which is particularly valuable in high-traffic or ADA-sensitive environments.
Can acoustical doors be specified with fire ratings?
Yes. Acoustical doors can be specified in fire-labeled configurations while maintaining acoustic performance, meeting both safety and building code requirements. This is commonly required in healthcare, government, industrial, and educational occupancies where both acoustic separation and fire-rated construction are mandated by code.
What door system is appropriate for a SCIF or secure government facility?
SCIFs need doors that meet the acoustic requirements of ICD/ICS 705, which sets Sound Group 3 or Sound Group 4 performance depending on the facility. Memtech Acoustics specifies QuietGuard™ SCIF doors for these projects: high-mass steel skins, multi-layer acoustic cores and precision perimeter seals, available for new SCIF construction and for renovation of existing secure spaces.
Do acoustical doors come factory pre-assembled, or are they field-assembled on site?
Most door systems arrive at the job site completely factory-assembled, including all hardware, seals, glazing, and threshold. This significantly reduces installation time, limits field fit-up variables that can compromise acoustic performance, and ensures the door performs as tested. The QuietSlide® power-sliding system ships with the motor and belt system pre-assembled and crated for transport.
Can Memtech Acoustics help me specify the right acoustical door for my project?
Yes. Memtech Acoustics provides engineering consultation for door selection based on your STC target, opening size, fire rating requirements, application environment and aesthetic criteria. Installation is coordinated through qualified subcontractors in select regions. CAD drawings are included with custom orders, and LEED documentation is available upon request.
Do you supply rolling, lifting or sliding acoustic doors for large openings?
Yes. For openings too wide for a swing door, Memtech Acoustics supplies sliding, vertical lifting and rolling acoustic doors. QuietSlide® sliding doors are rated STC 51 and suit openings from about 10 x 10 ft up to 20 x 30 ft. Ratings for lifting and rolling doors depend on the model and are confirmed when the door is quoted.
How long does it take to get an acoustical door?
Typical lead time is 2 to 3 weeks for custom submittal drawings, then 8 to 12 weeks for fabrication, depending on door type, size and configuration. Memtech Acoustics confirms the schedule for each project. Most doors ship factory-assembled with seals, hardware and threshold installed, and installation is coordinated through qualified subcontractors in select regions.
When will an acoustical door not solve the problem?
When the wall or another path leaks more sound than the door. A door is one element of a partition, so a high-STC door in a wall rated well below it, or beside unsealed ducts, gaps or a lightweight ceiling, will not deliver its rating in the field. Memtech Acoustics matches the door to the adjacent wall assembly and checks those flanking paths before recommending a rating.
